Learn about the city’s blood-soaked past through locations, anecdotes, and stories. Best experienced as the sun goes down and shadows fill the streets. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and be aware that there are no public toilets on the route. Some topics may be unsuitable for young children. Start at Greyfriars Graveyard and see the Covenanters’ Prison. Walk to the Grassmarket and learn about public executions. Pass by the White Hart Inn and West Bow. Continue to Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery, and the Royal Mile. Visit Advocate’s Close and the Real Mary Kings Close. See Old Fishmarket Close and Deacon Brodie’s Close. Walk to the Vaults and Niddry Street Vaults. Pass by the Banshee Labyrinth and Paisley Close. Continue to John Knox House and World’s End Close. Walk to St Mary’s Street and Canongate Kirkyard. Walk through the Cowgate and finish back where we started.
